English Language Institute
RIT/ACMT's English Language Institute was founded to help students develop their general English language skills and knowledge to make their transition into mainstream study at the college more efficient.
The intensive English Learning Course is offered in the fall quarter and lasts for 10 weeks. The course is designed for students who are required to upgrade their language skills, based on their admission results. Although it is a non-credit course, completing it successfully is a condition for continuing studying at the college. The course will require high level of commitment from students to build English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills to the level required to succeed at RIT/ACMT. Besides ELI, students have three regular courses from the fall quarter of their first year.
The course activities include classroom instruction and language lab. There are 12 class hours (contact hours) and eight lab hours every week.
During the course, students practice listening, speaking, reading, and writing English. Activities include listening and speaking in a variety of communicative situations, pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary practice, completing reading and writing exercises.
In order to develop more confidence in speaking and to increase their fluency and
comprehension of English, students will participate in a variety of activities such as role-playing, discussions, debating, organizing and making short presentations, as well as evaluating their own and other students' performance. The conversation practice will also help students develop language skills including grammar, sentence structure, vocabulary and pronunciation.
After the fall quarter, students who successfully pass the English Language Institute will proceed in the winter quarter with regular credit courses including our Basic Writing course to help them continue to work on improving their knowledge of the English language.
Students' English language skills improve significantly, which helps them achieve better results throughout the rest of their education at RIT/ACMT. This kind of enrollment demands that their course schedule be adjusted which indicates that their completion of all courses will be prolonged for one additional academic quarter.
